Cornwall Park Meeting Room /Te Mākaramū
About this space
Te Mākaramū (The Meeting Room) is the former Cornwall Park tea kiosk and located next to the award-winning playground and splash pad in Cornwall Park. Designed by architect Harold Davies, it began life as the tea kiosk for the Cornwall Cricket Club, and functioned as a venue for the Hawke's Bay Playcentre for many years. It was restored in 2023 to be made available for community use. It’s a great multifunctional space for birthday parties, community groups, exercise groups, meetings, training and workshops.
The venue is available for hire as a single space. It includes a large commercial-grade kitchen and accessible toilet facilities. There is outside access to a small privately fenced veranda area, ideal for barbeques. The interior space is fully carpeted, and has a subtle Art Deco style, as a nod to the building’s heritage.

The hall dimensions are approximately 12.5m x 12.5m. There are 4x double socket power points available to use.
The commercial kitchen facility is located within the hall. You are welcome to use the kitchen for catering your event, or for activities such as cooking classes and demonstrations.

Please note that there is no dishwasher available, so all dishes will need to be washed by hand.
Available for your use:
- 17x dinner plates, 20x side plates, 20x bowls, 33 coffee cups, 30x each of knives, forks, spoons.
You will need to BYO glassware.
You are welcome to serve alcohol at your event, however you will need to obtain a special license from Hastings District Council if you plan to sell any alcohol (https://www.hastingsdc.govt.nz/services/alcohol-licensing/special-license/).
You may use external caterers for your event, although please be aware that there is no direct vehicle access to the kiosk, so all food and equipment must be carried from Roberts Street.
There is a TV available upon request. You will be required to bring your own HDMI or casting equipment to use this TV.
Cleaning equipment (including vacuum) is provided.

Unfortunately, we do not allow the use of bouncy castles or other amusement devices for private bookings at this park
You are welcome to decorate the hall space for your event, but please do not use pins, tape or removable hooks as these may damage the painted surfaces. Blu-tac is OK if used with care.
Please note the hall must be left as you found it, so all decorations must be removed. We cannot accommodate storage outside your booking time, so please book all the time you need in the space to set up, pack down and clean up, as the hall may be used directly before or after you.
Please do not use confetti, rice, party poppers or balloons in the outside area, as these may impact the bird and aquatic life at the park.
BBQs to be used outdoors only. Use ground cover to prevent fat staining on the concrete. No BBQs in the playground area.
You are expected to leave the hall and kitchen as you found it, and to book enough time after your event to clean up.
Take your rubbish with you; al rubbish must be removed from the park.
Additional details
The best parking for this venue is street parking along Roberts Street. This is an approximately 60m walk through the park to the building. The hall is fully wheelchair accessible, and there is an accessible bathroom inside the hall as well as a full Changing Places facility next door. You must be a registered Changing Places member to use this facility.
Please be aware that there is no direct vehicle access to the kiosk, so all food and equipment must be carried from Roberts Street.
